City Edge Project

What is the City Edge Project?

The City Edge Project is a joint initiative between Dublin City Council and South Dublin County Council and represents the most significant housing and economic regeneration and redevelopment opportunity ever undertaken in Dublin. It has the potential to be one of the largest and most transformational regeneration projects in Europe. The City Edge Project covers an area of approx. 700 hectares and is strategically positioned between the M50, the Naas Road, Ballymount and Park West areas. More information on the current status of the project itself, together with local authority contact details is available on www.cityedge.ie.

City Edge Project Districts

The City Edge Project is divided into 5 distinct districts and character areas:

  • Kylemore
  • Naas Road
  • Greenhills
  • Red Cow
  • Cherry Orchard

City Edge Strategic Framework – Current Status

The City Edge Strategic Framework was published in August 2022 and sets out the trajectory of regeneration of a new urban quarter. In particular the Strategic Framework sets out:

  • High-level strategies, vision, and objectives for each district and character area (land use plan)
  • Delivery of strategic infrastructure (streets, parks, public transport & utilities)
  • Outlines a series of priority actions in the areas of legislation, policy, funding, and infrastructure to facilitate City Edge
  • Seeks governmental alignment (policies and programs) to deliver the City Edge Project
  • Provides a context for the preparation of a statutory plan (Local Area Plan, Urban Development Zone or Other)

City Edge Statutory Plan – Next Phase

  • The next phase of the City Edge Project is scheduled to commence in late 2022. This phase will involve the development and implementation of a Statutory Plan for the area.
  • It is likely that the statutory plan will be adopted in 2024.
